Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has communicated that Iran will facilitate a meeting between Indian authorities and the 17 Indian crew members of a cargo vessel detained by the Iranian military near the Strait of Hormuz. The minister relayed this information to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during a phone call on Sunday, as per an Iranian statement.
During the dialogue, Jaishankar called for the immediate release of the Indians on board the Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel MSC Aries. Amir-Abdollahian assured that representatives from the Indian government would soon be able to meet with the crew, adding that they are examining the specifics of the seized ship.
Jaishankar voiced his concerns regarding the well-being of the 17 Indian crew members and sought Iran’s support in this matter. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) of Iran seized the ‘MSC Aries,’ citing its alleged ties to Israel.
The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) stated on Saturday that it is coordinating with relevant authorities for the welfare of the 25 crew members and the release of the ship.
Shortly after Iran’s action, White House National Security Council Spokesperson Adrienne Watson confirmed the crew’s composition, which includes nationals from India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Russia, and Estonia. Official sources in India indicated that they are engaged with Iran to secure the release of the 17 Indian crew members.
