A man has been apprehended by the Kaikalathur authorities in Tamil Nadu on allegations of perpetrating a ‘savage assault’ on his septuagenarian father, who succumbed to his injuries several weeks later. The assault purportedly stemmed from a dispute over property and was captured on surveillance footage, subsequently disseminated across various social media platforms.
The victim, identified as Kuzhanthaivel, hails from the Veppanthattai vicinity of Perambalur district. He is survived by his wife, Hema, aged 65, along with their progeny: a son named Sakthivel, aged 34, and a daughter named Sangavi, aged 32. Kuzhanthaivel was known to possess a sago palm plantation in Sarvoy Pudur near Thalaivasal, Salem district, in addition to a rice field in Perambalur and an agricultural estate. Sakthivel, along with his own family, resides in Attur, Salem.
The viral footage captures the son delivering a series of forceful blows upon his father, who was seated in a chair on the porch of his residence. The elder gentleman was rendered unconscious by the assault, only to be subjected to further blows, resulting in severe bleeding. Subsequently, three individuals, including a woman, are observed restraining the assailant.
Reportedly, Sakthivel had requested his father to partition the family assets, including the sago plantation, a plea that was rebuffed. Fueled by rage, Sakthivel confronted his father at their Perambalur residence on February 16, unleashing violence upon him. Following the attack, Sakthivel transported his critically injured father to the hospital, yet his fury remained unabated, prompting another assault.
Nearly eight weeks subsequent to the incident, Kuzhanthaivel passed away on April 18. The episode, wherein Sakthivel assaulted his father, was captured by the household CCTV system. Following an investigation led by Attur DSP Satish Kumar, the Kaikalathur authorities registered a case against Sakthivel on April 25.
Addressing the matter, Attur DSP Satish Kumar remarked, “Despite the father’s residence in Perambalur district, he was assaulted by his son at their shared domicile. The incident, captured by the household CCTV, has since garnered widespread attention, prompting necessary intervention by the Kaikalathur authorities.”
