In the late hours of May 10, New Delhi and its neighboring regions experienced robust dust storms, accompanied by brisk winds reaching velocities of 50-70 km/h. Within the confines of the national capital, some localities encountered electricity interruptions, while certain air travel routes necessitated diversions due to the forceful gusts.
As per the meteorological bureau, climatic conditions are slated for amelioration commencing from May 13, extending through till May 16. Forecasts indicate an anticipated range of temperatures with highs pegged at approximately 39 degrees Celsius and lows at 29 degrees Celsius for May 11.
Furthermore, prognostications hint at prospects of mild to moderate precipitation, coupled with thunderous disturbances, electrical discharges, and vigorous winds across multiple sectors of Northern India, encompassing locales such as Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh until May 13, extending over Rajasthan until May 12. Concurrently, warm and moisture-laden atmospheric settings are poised to persist along the coastal belts of Gujarat until May 14.
Quoting from the Indian Meteorological Department’s report, “A cyclonic circulation prevails over northeastern Assam, while a parallel system exists over eastern Bangladesh, and an elongated axis stretches from eastern Assam to northern Odisha within the lower atmospheric strata.”
Further insights include the anticipation of moderate precipitation across the entire northeastern expanse, spanning Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, prevailing until May 16.
Turning attention to the Southern and Peninsular regions, the IMD projects impending showers impacting Karnataka and Kerala on May 12 and 13, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on May 13, and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on May 12. Additionally, a warning for potential hailstorm activity has been issued for Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand on May 12.
“Expect thundersquall winds (ranging between 50-60 kmph) to manifest sporadically across Uttarakhand from May 11 to 13,” while “Isolated instances of substantial precipitation are highly probable over the Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad region on May 12,” stated the IMD.
Supplementing these forecasts, the IMD elaborated on expectations of “isolated to scattered instances of light to moderate precipitation, coinciding with thunderous disturbances, electrical discharges, and brisk winds (ranging between 30-40 kmph) across Haryana-Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan during May 11-13.”
