In a recent ceremony, Chief Magistrate of India, D Y Chandrachud, extended felicitations to erstwhile Union minister and seasoned advocate Kapil Sibal on his ascension to the presidency of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
Presiding over a ceremonial session, the CJI expressed, “Mr. Sibal, my sincerest congratulations on your election as the head of the SCBA. We anticipate your collaboration and that of the executive committee members.”
In response, Sibal conveyed his gratitude to the CJI, remarking, “It is a privilege to be granted this opportunity to serve the bar after a span of 22 years. We pledge full cooperation from our end, a commitment we extend to the judiciary. It is through this concerted effort that we can advance our shared objectives.”
Sibal clinched the position of SCBA president on Thursday, securing a majority of over 1000 votes, triumphing over his closest competitor, senior advocate Pradeep Rai. This marks Sibal’s fourth tenure as the President of SCBA.
Apart from Sibal, senior advocates Adish C Aggarwala, Pradeep Kumar Rai, Priya Hingorani, alongside advocates Tripurari Ray and Neeraj Srivastava, contended for the presidency of SCBA.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Sibal served as the additional solicitor general of India from 1989-90 and attained senior advocate status in 1983.
Sibal declared his candidacy for the SCBA presidency on May 8. His previous tenures as SCBA president were in 2001-02, 1995–1996, and 1997–1998.
