In the MPMLA Court here on Tuesday, May 21, proceedings commenced regarding the allegations against erstwhile Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his purportedly derogatory remarks about Union Home Minister and eminent BJP luminary Amit Shah. The judiciary has mandated Rahul Gandhi’s presence on June 11.
BJP affiliate Naveen Jha has accused Rahul Gandhi of making disparaging comments about the then national president of the party, Amit Shah, during a 2018 event. Rahul Gandhi had declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a faction capable of appointing “a murderer as the national president.” He asserted, “Such occurrences do not transpire in Congress, and I will ensure they never will,” referencing his lineage as the son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
In response to these allegations, BJP adherent Navin Jha lodged a formal complaint, contending that Rahul Gandhi’s assertions were unfounded and defamatory toward his leader and the party. Following this grievance, the Ranchi MPMLA court issued a summons to Rahul Gandhi. Subsequently, Rahul Gandhi sought recourse in the Jharkhand High Court, which ultimately denied him any reprieve.
With the High Court’s dismissal of his plea, the MPMLA Court in Ranchi reconvened, instructing Rahul Gandhi to make a court appearance on June 11.
Advocate Vinod Sahu, representing the petitioner Naveen Jha, stated that the subsequent developments post-June 11 will elucidate the measures Rahul Gandhi undertakes and the judiciary’s ensuing verdict.
