In a reminiscent encounter this January, Jaishankar and Mahmud engaged on the periphery of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala, Uganda.
Mahmud recounted the fruitfulness of discussions with Jaishankar in enhancing the fabric of India-Bangladesh ties. Jaishankar, extending congratulations on Mahmud’s ascension, expressed eagerness to host him in Delhi imminently.
Hailing from the southeastern enclave of Chittagong in Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud previously assumed the mantle of Deputy Foreign Minister during Sheikh Hasina’s second term from 2009 to 2014.
Following the triumph in the elections on January 7, where the Awami League secured 223 seats, Hasina’s party was ushered into governance. The 36-member cabinet of the Awami League government took form after President Mohammad Shahabuddin’s invitation to assume leadership.
