In the parliamentary arena this morning, an unusual camaraderie unfolded as Prime Minister Narendra Modi extolled his predecessor, Manmohan Singh, as an “exemplar” for legislators.
In bidding farewell to the retiring members, the Prime Minister reminisced about a pivotal moment when Dr. Singh, in a wheelchair, participated in a crucial legislative vote.
Reflecting on the incident, he remarked, “During the voting session, the prevailing knowledge was that the treasury bench would secure victory. However, Dr. Manmohan Singh, despite his physical constraints, wheeled himself in to cast his vote—an instance of unwavering commitment to duty. Truly, he stood as an inspirational model among the members,” he expressed.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the significance lay not in whom Mr. Singh supported but rather in his perceived reinforcement of democracy. “It’s not a matter of allegiance; it’s about fortifying our democratic foundation,” he asserted.
Extending his wishes, he added, “May he endure a lengthy life, continuing to provide us with guidance.”
Recalling a prior occasion in August, when Mr. Singh, again in a wheelchair, participated in a parliamentary discussion on a pivotal bill empowering the central government in matters concerning the Delhi government, the Prime Minister underscored his consistent commitment. Mr. Singh had also cast his vote during Presidential elections in a similar manner.
Acknowledging Manmohan Singh’s substantial contributions both as a leader and in opposition, the Prime Minister remarked, “Ideological disparities may be transient, but Manmohan Singh’s enduring guidance in this House and the nation will be eternally associated with every deliberation on our democratic principles.”
Following the Prime Minister’s remarks, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge expressed gratitude for the acknowledgment of Manmohan Singh’s efforts.
“Manmohan Singh contributed commendably. I extend my thanks to the PM for his commendation. This exemplifies the appropriate approach—acknowledge commendable efforts and critique inadequacies,” articulated the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha.
A six-time Member of Parliament, Manmohan Singh held the position of the country’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His extensive political journey also encompassed roles such as Finance Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government and RBI Governor from 1982 to 1985.
