In a startling development within Assam’s political landscape preceding the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, the veteran statesman and acting president of the Pradesh Congress Committee, Rana Goswami, has severed ties with the venerable Congress party. Goswami’s decision seems rooted in discontentment with the party’s leadership.
Expressing his decision through a missive addressed to K C Venugopal, the General Secretary (organization) of AICC (All India Congress Committee), Rana Goswami has formally resigned from his position as the working president and renounced his membership in the Indian National Congress. Goswami, a formidable figure in the upper Assam region, leaves a noticeable void in the party’s ranks.
Speculation is rife that Goswami might align himself with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), pending deliberations with the saffron party’s leadership in the capital, New Delhi. Concurrently, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma embarked on a journey to the national capital on Wednesday. Reports suggest that Rana Goswami, accompanied by CM Sharma, is slated to confer with BJP’s national-level leaders.
It is anticipated that, during today’s meetings, Rana Goswami will express his inclination to join the BJP to the national leaders of the party. If negotiations proceed favorably, Goswami is expected to don a saffron scarf at Guwahati Vajpayee Bhavan in the inaugural week of March. This momentous decision by Goswami has sent shockwaves through the political circles of the region.
