In a recent official decree, IPS officer Anurag Agarwal has assumed the leadership role in Parliament security. Presently serving as an inspector general in CRPF, this 1998-batch officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre is now designated as the joint secretary (security) for a tenure of three years. Agarwal is stepping into this new responsibility at a crucial juncture when the security measures at the Parliament House complex are undergoing significant enhancements. This development comes in the wake of an incident on December 13, where two individuals breached security, leaping into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery and releasing yellow smoke.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat officially issued his appointment order on Thursday, filling the vacancy that had persisted since October 20 when the former joint secretary, Raghubir Lal, returned to his cadre. Traditionally entrusted to an IPS officer, the position of JS (Security) is pivotal in maintaining the security integrity of the parliamentary premises.
