In Mumbai, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, asserted on Sunday that despite the loud clamor from the ruling BJP, they lack the audacity to enact significant changes to the Constitution. He emphasized that truth and the support of the people stand firmly with his party. Notably, BJP MP Anant Kumar Hegde recently expressed the need for a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament to rectify the distortions and superfluous additions introduced by the Congress.
Responding to the controversy ignited by Hegde’s remarks, the BJP moved swiftly to downplay it, labeling it as his “personal opinion” and seeking clarification from him. Rahul Gandhi delivered his remarks at a gathering in Mumbai after embarking on the ‘Nyay Sankalp Padyatra’ from Mani Bhavan, the residence of Mahatma Gandhi, to the August Kranti Maidan, the historic site where the Quit India movement commenced in 1942 during India’s struggle for independence from British rule.
He stated, “The BJP may make considerable noise, but it lacks the courage to alter the Constitution. The truth and the backing of the people are on our side.” Rahul Gandhi, the Member of Parliament from Wayanad, highlighted that the ongoing battle transcends mere party politics; it’s about two contrasting ideologies. “One ideology advocates centralization of power, where knowledge is concentrated in a single individual. Conversely, we advocate decentralization of power, amplifying the voices of the people,” he asserted. He further emphasized that possessing an IIT degree doesn’t inherently confer superior knowledge compared to a farmer.
Contrary to their claims, Rahul Gandhi pointed out, the BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and the RSS, promotes a vision where knowledge is monopolized. “According to them, farmers, laborers, and unemployed youth lack knowledge,” he added. Rahul Gandhi wrapped up his 63-day-long ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ on Saturday by paying homage to Dr. B R Ambedkar at his memorial ‘Chaityabhoomi’ in central Mumbai and reciting the Preamble of the Constitution.
The yatra, aimed at grassroots engagement ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, commenced from strife-torn Manipur on January 14. On Sunday morning, Rahul Gandhi commenced the ‘Nyay Sankalp Padyatra’ from Mani Bhavan, accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Tushar Gandhi (the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi), and numerous Congress supporters. The padyatra is slated to continue until the August Kranti Maidan, symbolizing the relentless pursuit of freedom from oppression.
Joining Rahul Gandhi in the padyatra were members of various opposition constituents. The ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ which concluded in Mumbai, will culminate in a rally by the opposition INDIA bloc later in the day, showcasing their collective strength. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav are among the prominent leaders scheduled to participate in the event.
