In the heart of New Delhi, the Supreme Court is poised to deliver its verdict on Monday regarding the request for regular bail made by Satyendar Jain, a prominent figure within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), in connection with a money laundering investigation.
A bench comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal had kept their decision pending since January 17, after considering arguments presented by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Jain, and Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, acting for the Enforcement Directorate.
Previously, on December 14, 2023, the apex court had extended the interim bail granted to Jain until January 8, citing medical reasons. This interim relief was initially granted on May 26, 2023, and has been consistently prolonged.
Challenging the Delhi High Court’s rejection of his regular bail plea on April 6, 2023, Jain has appealed to the Supreme Court. The Enforcement Directorate had apprehended the AAP leader on May 30, 2022, on allegations of money laundering through four companies purportedly associated with him.
The ED’s action stemmed from a CBI FIR lodged against Jain in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Despite vehemently refuting these accusations, Jain had obtained regular bail from the trial court on September 6, 2019, in connection with the CBI’s case.
