External Relations Minister Dr. Jaishankar reiterated India’s backing of the Philippines in safeguarding its national sovereignty. This affirmation comes amidst China’s assertive maneuvers in the South China Sea. The Defense Minister of the Philippines challenged China on Monday to pursue international arbitration regarding its claims in the South China Sea following a recent altercation. Sources indicate that Manila accused China’s coastguard of employing a water cannon against a civilian vessel at the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, resulting in damage and casualties.

During a joint press declaration following discussions with the Philippines’ Foreign Minister, Enrique Manalo, Jaishankar stated, “As a nation deeply invested in this region due to its Act East policy and Indo-Pacific vision, India closely monitors all developments. We strongly advocate for ASEAN’s centrality, unity, and cohesion. We firmly believe that the advancement and prosperity of this region are best served by unwavering adherence to a rules-based framework”.

“The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 holds particular significance in this context as the cornerstone of maritime regulations. All parties must fully comply with it, both in principle and in practice.
