Netflix has incorporated the forthcoming cinematic masterpiece Amar Singh Chamkila into its already remarkable repertoire. The directorial prowess of Imtiaz Ali graces this film, starring none other than Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in pivotal roles. The creators of this highly anticipated work unveiled its trailer on Thursday.
Clocking in at 2 minutes and 37 seconds, the trailer unveils Diljit Dosanjh’s aspirations of achieving eminence as a vocalist. He confides in his comrade about his persistent preoccupation with melodies, lamenting his entrapment in menial occupations. The narrative unfolds his odyssey from destitution to becoming Punjab’s renowned live performer. Further amplifying the anticipation, both Diljit and Parineeti have rendered their voices to several musical compositions featured in the film.
This cinematic venture delves into the untold saga of Amar Singh Chamkila, the indigenous rock icon of Punjab, who soared from rags to riches during the 1980s. He reigned as the top-selling recording artist of his era, his life tragically cut short by assassination at the tender age of 27. Despite his youthfulness, he remains revered as one of Punjab’s preeminent stage virtuosos.
Captured amidst authentic settings, the film pledges to transport audiences into the vibrant and rhythmic realm of Punjabi folk music, even encompassing the rustic Akhadaas (live music performances in villages) where Chamkila’s voice reverberated. The musical score is orchestrated by the maestro AR Rahman, complemented by the poetic verses of Irshad Kamil.
Diljit embodies the persona of Amar Singh Chamkila, affectionately dubbed the ‘Elvis Presley of Punjab’, while Parineeti portrays Amarjot, Chamkila’s spouse and musical collaborator. The production is funded by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films. Its premiere is slated for April 12th on Netflix’s OTT platform.
