In New Delhi on Tuesday (May 21), Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, ex-leader Sonia Gandhi, and parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi honored the memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the 33rd anniversary of his passing at Veer Bhumi.
The current Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his respects for Rajiv Gandhi on his passing. “On this day, in memory of our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji,” PM Modi conveyed on X.
Additional members of the Congress party such as P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot likewise showed their reverence for the late prime minister in the capital city.
Rajiv Gandhi, the first-born of Indira and Feroze Gandhi, held the position of India’s 7th prime minister from 1984 to 1989. He was tragically slain by the LTTE in Sriperumbudur in 1991.
Assuming leadership of the Congress in 1984 following his mother’s assassination, Rajiv Gandhi became India’s most youthful Prime Minister at the age of 40 upon taking office in October 1984. He continued in this role until December 2, 1989.
Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi met his demise at the hands of an LTTE suicide bomber during an electoral rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991. To mark this solemn occasion, India commemorates Anti-Terrorism Day annually on this day.
