In a significant setback to the Assam Pradesh Congress unit preceding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, two of its Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have declared their allegiance to the BJP-led government in Assam.
Notably, both legislators will maintain their affiliation with the Congress while concurrently choosing to continue their endorsement of the BJP administration. MLAs Basanta Das and Kamalaksha Dey Purkayastha overtly conveyed their collaboration in all the undertakings of the BJP government in Assam, symbolized by garlanding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the Assam Assembly premises on Wednesday.
Conversely, Kamalaksha Dey Purkayastha, holding the position of working president within the state Congress, tendered his resignation from the role. Kamalakshi Dey Purkayastha has formally submitted his resignation letter to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Bora. In the missive, Kamalaksha stipulated his intent to persist as a primary member of the Congress party. Subsequently resigning from the role of Congress working president, Kamalaksha met with the chief minister.
The two Congress MLAs have proffered their backing to the BJP government in Assam, advancing arguments in its favor. They articulated their endorsement for the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government, citing the imperative for the development of their constituencies.
Precedently, two other Congress MLAs, Shashikant Das and Siddique Ahmed, had declared their alignment with the BJP government in the state. Consequently, the count of MLAs within the Congress party, concurrently supporting the BJP administration, has surged to four.
