In Bhubaneswar, security personnel stationed at Biju Patnaik International Airport made a notable discovery, uncovering a sum of Rs 75 lakh concealed within the luggage of two individuals during routine scans. This revelation transpired just recently.
During the meticulous scrutiny of baggage, officers unearthed a substantial amount of cash totaling Rs 75 lakh from the trolley bags of two distinct travelers. One of these individuals had arrived from Chennai, while the other journeyed from New Delhi. This intriguing occurrence unfolded over the past forty-eight hours.
Specifically, a sum of Rs 28 lakh was apprehended from the luggage trolley of a traveler who had disembarked from a flight originating in Delhi. Additionally, a sum of Rs 47 lakh was discovered within the belongings of another traveler who had just arrived from Chennai.
In light of the ongoing enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, coinciding with the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Odisha, officials from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) promptly alerted the Income Tax department regarding this matter. Subsequently, an investigation has been initiated to delve into the circumstances surrounding the seized cash.
Between the commencement of March and the middle of April, a plethora of enforcement agencies has been actively seizing contraband within the state, amassing a total worth of Rs 118.65 crore. This collective effort has resulted in the confiscation of various items including cash, liquor, drugs, and other illicit substances.
Remarkably, during this period, enforcement agencies have intercepted cash amounting to Rs 2.07 crore, liquor valued at Rs 18.19 crore, drugs with an estimated worth of Rs 43.69 crore, precious metals amounting to Rs 7.17 crore, and a diverse array of freebies and miscellaneous items collectively valued at Rs 47.44 crore from within the state of Odisha, as disclosed by officials from the Election Commission.
