New Delhi: Rajiv Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner, put to rest concerns regarding the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) on Friday, offering assurances of their safety and reliability.
Kumar affirmed that EVMs are meticulously protected with comprehensive safeguards covering technology, administration, and procedures, ensuring 100% safety.
“This is a well-established matter. EVMs are completely safe. It has been considered by the honorable Court, and we await its verdict. Nonetheless, no harm will come to these machines. All political parties and candidates are engaged at every phase. Test elections are conducted,” he responded to queries about the reliability of EVMs.
“There are various layers of security, spanning technology, administrative oversight, and systematic protocols. Embrace the voting process without hesitation. This is a moment to celebrate casting your ballot without harboring doubts,” Kumar advised.
“Your voting experience should be enjoyable and free of worries. Your vote remains secure, ensuring its accurate reflection,” Kumar reiterated. On Friday, the initial phase of the Lok Sabha elections commenced across 102 constituencies within 21 states and union territories.
Reports from the field indicated voter enthusiasm, with significant participation even during rainfall. Voters across age groups, including women and youth, turned out in large numbers, creating an exuberant atmosphere in the name of democracy, Kumar remarked.
The Election Commission has harnessed technology extensively to enhance voter engagement by targeting traditionally low-turnout constituencies with youth and female voters. “We devised a plan tailored to local contexts. Many notable personalities were enlisted, and collaborations took place with various establishments such as petrol stations, banks, and post offices in our outreach efforts,” Kumar shared.
“We are optimistic about high voter participation. We urge everyone to partake in this democratic celebration: youth, women, transgender individuals, persons with disabilities, people from all regions—exercise your right, duty, responsibility, and pride,” the CEC encouraged.
Alongside fellow Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and S S Sandhu, Kumar oversaw the election process from the Election Commission headquarters’ control room.
