Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a sacred occasion dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. While Vishnu is the preserver of the universe, Lakshmi is the deity who bestows all kinds of prosperity. Let’s delve into the significance of Diwali and why Goddess Lakshmi adorns the feet of Lord Vishnu.
The Date for Diwali in 2023
Diwali is celebrated on the 12th of November in 2023. In Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi hold a paramount position. It’s often depicted in imagery that Goddess Lakshmi sits near Lord Vishnu’s feet. But have you ever wondered why the Goddess of wealth humbly touches Vishnu’s feet? Let’s explore the fascinating reasons behind it.
Why Does Lakshmi Touch Vishnu’s Feet?
According to a legendary tale, once, Sage Narada asked Goddess Lakshmi why she always touched Lord Vishnu’s feet. To this, Goddess Lakshmi explained that whether one is a human or a deity, the influence of celestial bodies, the planets, affects everyone equally. In women’s hands resides the celestial guru, whereas in the feet of men, the demon guru Shukracharya resides. Thus, when a woman touches a man’s feet, it symbolizes the union of the divine and the demon, resulting in prosperity. This is why Goddess Lakshmi touches Lord Vishnu’s feet.
The Second Narrative
In another story, Alakshmi, the elder sister of Goddess Lakshmi, was envious of her sister’s immense beauty. While Lakshmi was incredibly beautiful, Alakshmi lacked that charm. Whenever Goddess Lakshmi would accompany Lord Vishnu, Alakshmi would follow. This bothered Goddess Lakshmi. Alakshmi remarked that no one worshipped her. Therefore, she would always be wherever her sister, Lakshmi, went.
Infuriated by this, Goddess Lakshmi cursed Alakshmi. She said, “Where jealousy, greed, laziness, anger, and impurity prevail, that is where you shall reside.” As a result, Goddess Lakshmi perpetually cleanses her husband Lord Vishnu’s feet to prevent Alakshmi from coming near him.
Diwali is not only a celebration of lights and prosperity but also a profound reflection of these intriguing stories that underline the significance of Goddess Lakshmi and her connection with Lord Vishnu.
