In Coimbatore, a quintet, encompassing four individuals hailing from Bihar, found themselves detained under accusations of vending a 15-day-old female child to a barren couple nestled within the precincts of Coimbatore district. Ongoing scrutiny persists as authorities delve deeper into the matter whilst subjecting the suspects to interrogation, as disclosed by the police.

The genesis of this ordeal transpired subsequent to an investigation instigated by Childline into grievances concerning an alleged network engaged in the peddling of minors within the vicinity.

Narratives furnished by law enforcement delineate the involvement of Mahesh Kumar and Anjali, Bihar natives who managed a hostel situated in the environs of Appanayakkanpatti, proximate to Sulur in the Coimbatore district. Childline was tipped off regarding the purported involvement of the duo in trading an infant, who was purportedly conveyed by a kinsman from Bihar to a farmer identified as Vijayan, domiciled in the Thimmanayakkan Palayam area.

The intervention of Childline prompted an inquiry which culminated in the filing of a formal complaint at the Karumathambatti All Women Police Station. Subsequent investigations corroborated the complicity of Mahesh Kumar and Anjali, leading to their arrest on the 3rd of June.

Upon meticulous examination, it surfaced that Vijayan, who had grappled with infertility for a span of 17 years, had fruitlessly pursued avenues for adoption. Vijayan was acquainted with Anjali and Mahesh Kumar, who purportedly offered to facilitate the adoption of a 15-day-old infant from Bihar in exchange for a sum of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Upon acquiescence to the terms, Anjali directed her mother, Poonam Devi in Bihar, to persuade an underprivileged couple to relinquish their 15-day-old daughter.

Consequently, Poonam Devi, along with her younger daughter Megh Kumari, transported the infant from Bihar to Sulur and consigned her to the care of Anjali and Mahesh Kumar. Vijayan was apprehended on the 4th of June.

Upon subjecting Anjali’s mother Poonam Devi and her daughter Megha Kumari to interrogation in Coimbatore, it was corroborated that they had indeed procured the child from an indigent couple in Bihar and peddled her in Coimbatore for Rs 2.5 lakh. Subsequently, the duo was detained.

Thus far, five individuals, four originating from Bihar, have been detained in connection with this case, with ongoing investigations aimed at ascertaining whether additional minors have been subject to similar transactions. The All Women Police Station of Karumathambatti presently spearheads the interrogation of the accused.
