In Kolkata, the Director General of Police for West Bengal, Rajeev Kumar, articulated on Thursday that the police force is committed to attentively addressing the grievances of each individual in Sandeshkhali, ensuring stringent measures against those deemed culpable.
During his visit to Sandeshkhali on Wednesday, where he opted to stay overnight for a comprehensive evaluation of the situation in the tumultuous zones within the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, Kumar provided assurances of resolute actions against individuals implicated in the mistreatment of women.
“We shall meticulously consider the complaints lodged by every individual. In the event of any untoward incident, we shall take unwavering action against those proven to be at fault. Should individuals be implicated in the unjust treatment of others, we shall enact suitable measures against them,” Kumar conveyed to the press at Dhamakhali in the early hours.
In his inaugural visit to the area since the commencement of protests, Kumar engaged in discussions with ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar, Basirhat Police District SP Hasan Mehedi Rehman, and other law enforcement officers. Additionally, he explored the adjacent islands of Situlia, Sardarpara, and Manipur on Wednesday evening to gain insights into the prevailing circumstances.
A specialized team assembled by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), tasked with investigating allegations of sexual violence and encroachment of land, is scheduled to visit Sandeshkhali on Thursday.
The NHRC has dispatched notices to Bengal Chief Secretary BP Gopalika and the DGP, soliciting comprehensive reports regarding the incidents of violence in Sandeshkhali. These reports are expected to encompass details on actions taken against the perpetrators of crimes within a span of four weeks.
