The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday apprehended Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) luminary K Kavitha in connection with an inquiry into an alleged corruption scandal tied to the Delhi excise policy, as disclosed by authorities.
Kavitha, aged 46, and the progeny of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was detained in Tihar jail following her detainment by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), officials conveyed.
The CBI secured authorization from a designated tribunal to take her into custody. While Kavitha remained in Tihar jail on Thursday, she is expected to be presented before a tribunal on Friday for the agency to seek her remand.
Should the CBI secure her remand, Kavitha will be relocated to the detention facility at the agency headquarters, where she will undergo interrogation by agents from the Anti-Corruption Branch, which oversees the investigation, officials indicated.
The CBI had previously interrogated Kavitha within the penal facility on Saturday after obtaining approval from the special tribunal. The BRS figure was queried about WhatsApp communications recovered from the phone of co-conspirator Buchi Babu, as well as documents associated with a real estate transaction, which allegedly saw Rs 100 crore funneled to the Aam Aadmi Party as illicit gains to influence the now-defunct Delhi excise policy to benefit a liquor consortium.
The ED had apprehended Kavitha from her Banjara Hills dwelling in Hyderabad on March 15.
