In Kolkata, the spouse of incarcerated TMC figure Monobrata Jana has officially accused NIA personnel of attempting to affront her dignity after forcibly entering her residence in Bhupatinagar under the guise of investigation, as stated by a police official on Sunday.
Over the weekend, the National Investigation Agency apprehended two central figures – Balai Charan Maity and Manobrata Jana – linked to a 2022 explosion case in Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals. Moni Jana, spouse of Jana, registered a grievance with Bhupatinagar police station, alleging that NIA officers also inflicted damage to her property during their incursion on Saturday morning, the official noted.
Following a complaint from the woman regarding mistreatment by NIA personnel, an FIR has been officially documented, and the authorities are currently examining the matter, disclosed the police official to PTI. The complaint has been supplemented with IPC Section 354, denoting assault with intent to insult a woman’s modesty, the official appended.
During an attempt to detain two primary suspects in the 2022 blast case in Purba Medinipur district, an NIA squad purportedly encountered hostility from a crowd on Saturday, instigating a political quarrel with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blaming the investigators for aggression towards villagers.
As per the National Investigation Agency (NIA), one of its operatives sustained injuries and a vehicle incurred damage during the altercation in Bhupatinagar.
Subsequently, law enforcement has yet to apprehend any individuals involved in the assault on NIA personnel, who have submitted a formal grievance with the Bhupatinagar police station, the official added. “An inquiry is currently underway,” he asserted.
The assault on the NIA team draws parallels to events of January 5th when an Enforcement Directorate (ED) contingent was accosted by a mob in North 24 Parganas district’s Sandeshkhali during a search at the residence of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh, in connection with alleged improprieties in the public distribution system.
