In New Delhi, the Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, sanctioned the suspension of an adjunct professor on Saturday for purportedly engaging in sexual misconduct towards female students pursuing MBBS at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, Rohini.

As per the directive issued by the LG, he endorsed the immediate suspension and further instigated significant disciplinary measures against the professor.

Citing the “alarming incident of sexual misconduct” transpiring within a medical institution, it was underscored that merely transferring the accused, as suggested by the internal complaints committee of the medical college, would not alleviate the “intimidating environment” for the students.

“I endorse the proposition of placing the officer under suspension with immediate effect, pursuant to Rule 10 of the CCS (CCA) Rules, 1965,” remarked the LG, emphasizing that the purported actions of the accused entailed “moral depravity.”

Furthermore, Saxena advised the relevant department to reconsider the proposition for commencing disciplinary measures against the accused, along with the requisite recommendations from the National Capital Civil Services Authority (NCCSA), given that the Delhi Chief Minister, serving as the chair of the panel, is presently in judicial confinement.

Meanwhile, in March 2023, students of the medical college and their kin accused the adjunct professor, Dr. Salim Shaikh, and demanded prompt action.

During February of the present year, the medical college students initially lodged complaints with the college principal regarding the accused. Subsequently, a case was registered by the police, yet no further steps were taken.

Nearly a month later, when female students staged protests, Delhi Health Minister, Saurabh Bhardwaj, directed immediate action against the principal and departmental head for the reprehensible act of coercing the students to retract their grievances.
