New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday announced a heatwave alert for various regions across India, including Maharashtra, North Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and West Bengal.

As per the IMD’s morning briefing, a distinct heat advisory has been issued for metropolitan areas in Maharashtra such as Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad, signaling an imminent heatwave forecasted for this week.

In contrast, the national capital and adjacent NCR cities may experience a break from the sweltering temperatures due to the influence of a Western disturbance this week.

For April 16, the meteorological department forecasts overcast skies interspersed with vigorous surface winds that may reach velocities of 20 to 25 kmph during the day in the national capital. The predicted maximum and minimum temperatures are poised to hit 35 and 22 degrees Celsius, respectively.

After a weekend with a refreshing breeze and scattered showers in Delhi, similar conditions are expected to persist for the next two days, as light rains and thunderstorms could affect parts of Delhi and NCR areas like Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.

“Isolated to dispersed precipitation, including thunderstorm, lightning, and blustery winds (30-40 kmph), is probable across Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan from April 18-21,” IMD mentioned.

The department also foresees potential isolated hailstorms over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh on April 18, and in Uttarakhand on April 18 and 19. Similarly, IMD forecasts precipitation across the northeast in the upcoming week.

“Widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall coupled with isolated thunderstorms and lightning is anticipated over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya during April 16-22,” IMD stated.

“Isolated heavy rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya on April 16, 17, 19 & 20,” it added.

“Hot and sultry weather is probable across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, Rayalaseema from April 16-18, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Konkan & Goa, coastal sectors of Gujarat, and Coastal Karnataka on April 16, 2024,” IMD added.
