In the heart of New Delhi, Alstom, a global pacesetter in intelligent and sustainable transportation, inaugurated the production phase for its cutting-edge Metropolis trainsets earmarked for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) Phase IV initiative. Concluded in November 2022, this contractual agreement aspires to supply 52 train sets, each composed of six cars. The strategic blueprint encompasses servicing three distinct DMRC lines, with extensions to the prevailing Line 7 and Line 8, alongside the novel Gold Line 10, spanning a comprehensive distance of 64.67 kilometers.
The initiation ceremony, spearheaded by key figures from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and Alstom India, marked a pivotal moment. Addressing this milestone, Dr. Vikas Kumar, the Managing Director of DMRC, emphasized the pivotal role the Delhi metro plays as the city’s lifeblood. The integration of new routes, he asserted, would significantly amplify connectivity within the national capital.
Expressing contentment at Alstom’s commencement of Metro train production for Delhi Metro’s fourth phase, Dr. Kumar remarked, “We are confident that these contemporary trains will ensure a seamless and opulent journey for the commuters.” Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, echoed the sentiment, highlighting their enduring collaboration with Delhi Metro and underscoring the honor in contributing to India’s largest metro network’s sustained progress.
Loison remarked, “Our Metropolis metros boast an illustrious track record, ensuring a frugal lifecycle cost and prioritizing passenger experience. We are privileged to be fabricating these state-of-the-art trains for Delhi NCR commuters, furthering the adoption of sustainable mass mobility solutions.” Notably, the project’s total worth is 312 million euros, encompassing a 15-year maintenance commitment for 13 trainsets on the new line—a pioneering move, outsourcing maintenance to an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
The extension of Line 8 will elongate the Magenta Line from Janakpuri West to RK Ashram, while Line 7’s extension will interlink the Pink Line between Maujpur and Mukundpur, elevating DMRC connectivity to new heights. Alstom has additionally secured the contract for providing and implementing the train-control and signaling solution for Delhi MRTS Phase-IV Mukundpur – Maujpur (Line 7 ext.) and Aerocity – Tughlakabad Corridor (Line 10).
These lines will be outfitted with Alstom’s scalable Communications-Based Train Control solutions (CBTC), operating in tandem with its Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) system. The Metropolis trains epitomize a distinctive design, versatile configurations, and peak performance resulting from a harmonious blend of established, dependable components and cutting-edge innovations.
These avant-garde trains represent the pinnacle of green vehicular technology, engineered for a secure speed of 95 kmph and an operational speed of 85 kmph, boasting GOA 4 driverless capabilities—a testament to their environmental friendliness and passenger comfort in New Delhi’s metro network. Inspired by the tricolors of the Indian national flag, the saloon interior door pillars will showcase a palette of saffron, white, and green hues. Notably, Line 10’s train front will flaunt a metallic gold finish, marking Alstom’s debut use of this color in an Indian metro project.
Embracing the ‘Make in India’ initiative, these Metropolis trains have undergone comprehensive design within India and will materialize at the manufacturing hub in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. This facility stands as Alstom’s largest Urban Rolling Stock production site in India, boasting a robust track record in delivering for major domestic and international projects.
Alstom’s legacy with the Delhi Metro extends beyond 800 metro cars currently in service, establishing it as a key player in Asia’s expansive rapid transit systems. Collaborating on various projects, including the successful deployment of train control and signaling systems for DMRC’s Red Line (L1), Yellow Line (L2), Green Line (L5), Violet Line (L6), Pink Line (L7) during Phases I, II, and III, underscores Alstom’s commitment to advancing metro transportation in the region.
