In response to the expressed apprehensions of the Haryana government regarding the influx of JCBs, Poclaines, Tippers, Hydras, and other substantial earthmoving apparatus at the Shabhu border by protesting farmers, the Director-General of Police (DGP) for Punjab issued explicit directives on Tuesday. The orders were conveyed to all pertinent officers in Punjab, emphasizing the immediate cessation of the transportation of such machinery to the Punjab-Haryana Border entry points at Khanauri and Shambu.

Communicating via a missive addressed to the Range Additional Directors General of Police (ADGPs), Inspectors General of Police (IGPs), Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), Commissioners of Police, and Senior Superintendents of Police, the Punjab DGP underscored, “Stringent instructions have been disseminated to all Senior Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police, emphasizing the imperative prohibition of JCBs, Poclaines, Tippers, Hydras, and other formidable earthmoving equipment from reaching the Punjab-Haryana border at Khanauri and Shambu. This region is witnessing an ongoing farmers’ agitation, with intelligence suggesting potential plans by protestors to breach the Haryana Police barricades and infiltrate into Haryana. Such an incursion could precipitate a disruption in the law and order scenario for both states,” as articulated in the letter.

Earlier on, the Haryana DGP formally requested his Punjab counterpart, urging intervention to curb the advancement of earth-moving machinery towards the Shambhu and Khanauri borders.

Concurrently, in anticipation of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march scheduled for February 21, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, addressing a press conference on Wednesday morning, conveyed, “Our objective is not to foment chaos. We have meticulously planned our journey to Delhi since November 7. Any insinuation that the government lacked sufficient notice implies an attempt to disregard our concerns.”

He continued, “The extensive barricades erected to impede our progress are unjustified. We seek a peaceful passage to Delhi. Either dismantle the barricades and allow our entry or address our demands. We advocate for peace. Extend a hand, and we will reciprocate. Patience is paramount in handling this situation. I implore the youth not to lose composure.”

Expressing optimism amid the ongoing tensions, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda remarked, “Our intent is positive, and diverse opinions are welcome for constructive measures. The only viable avenue for translating these opinions into tangible outcomes is through dialogue. A resolution will undoubtedly emerge through constructive conversations.”
