In an extraordinary discovery, laborers unearthed silver coins from the British era while excavating pits for the construction of a residence in a village within the Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh on the 5th of March, sources revealed.
The excavation took place in the Khallasipura locality of Gwalior, where a group of two or three laborers engaged in digging for the construction of a house for a certain Sanjay Pal. During this process, the workers accidentally stumbled upon silver coins, as reported by local sources.
The news of this retrieval of British-era coins quickly spread throughout the area, causing a stir. It is said that the laborers, upon making the discovery, began to hastily appropriate these historical artifacts. In the midst of this chaos, a neighbor of Sanjay Pal, alerted by the commotion, also arrived at the site and claimed a portion of the discovered coins.
Harish, the son of Sanjay Pal, disclosed that he had heard rumors about a buried treasure in the plot. Intrigued, he headed to the location, only to find it deserted. Subsequently, Harish reported the incident to the Janakganj police station, providing a detailed account of the situation.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police promptly dispatched a team to the site, apprehending two laborers and the aforementioned neighbor. In the ensuing interrogation, authorities recovered seven silver coins from the British era, estimated to be more than 150 years old. “The Archaeology Department is being contacted for further investigation. Appropriate legal measures will be taken,” stated Dharmendra Singh, the in-charge of Janakganj police station. He added that inquiries are ongoing regarding the remaining coins, which hold archaeological significance.
