In a recent announcement, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary heat wave advisory for select regions of West Bengal, Odisha, East Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, slated to persist until April 26.
The mercury is expected to soar beyond 40 degrees Celsius today in Odisha and the Gangetic belt of West Bengal.
Apart from these areas, sultry conditions are anticipated across various southern states and Union Territories, encompassing coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, among others.
In its morning communique, the weather bureau has projected temperatures to scale up to a scorching 44 degrees Celsius this week across the eastern front of India. A recent analysis reveals a notable escalation of four to six degrees above normal in the northern, southern, and eastern territories over the past week.
The Quirk of Delhi’s Weather
The capital city witnessed brisk winds and showers in the early morning hours, providing a reprieve for Delhiites from the oppressive heat.
However, as per the latest IMD update, the heatwave is likely to persist in the national capital for the upcoming five days, with the maximum temperature expected to hover around the 40-degree Celsius mark.
Precipitation Patterns Across States
According to meteorological forecasts, the entire northeastern region, spanning Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, is poised to experience rainfall accompanied by strong winds until April 27.
IMD projects widespread to localized light to moderate rainfall or snowfall, coupled with sporadic thunderstorms, lightning, and brisk winds (30-40 kmph) over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from April 21 to 24. This will transition to scattered rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from April 25 to 27, 2024.
Likewise, there is a forecast for sporadic thunderstorms, lightning, and brisk winds (30-40 kmph) over Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim from April 22 to 24, Odisha from April 22 to 23, and Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on April 23.
A cyclonic disturbance is anticipated to bring isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall or snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, over “Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad” on April 22, and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on April 22 and 23, 2024.
Further predictions include isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning & brisk winds (30-40 kmph) over East Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh on April 22, 2024.
Southern Regions’ Outlook
Expect isolated light rainfall with sporadic thunderstorms and lightning over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on April 22nd and 24th, 2024, and in Konkan and Goa on April 21st.
Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with sporadic thunderstorms and lightning is on the horizon for Tamil Nadu, Kerala & Mahe, and Karnataka on April 21 and 22.
Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Telangana may witness isolated rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and brisk winds (40-60 km/h) from April 21 to 24, as per IMD forecasts.
Alert: Heatwave Warnings
The meteorological department has warned of imminent heatwave conditions in many/some regions of Gangetic West Bengal over the next 5 days and over Odisha on April 22, with isolated pockets in East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar over the next 5 days. The Sub-Himalayan West Bengal should brace for similar conditions from April 24 to 26, and Jharkhand on April 25 & 26, 2024.
Severe Heat Wave conditions are also expected in isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal from April 22 to 26.
Warm and humid conditions are highly likely to prevail over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Karnataka, and Kerala & Mahe from April 22 to 26.
Expect balmy nights with maximum temperatures exceeding 40°C over Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha on April 22.
