AAP implored the ruling NDA constituents TDP and JD(U) on Monday to ensure that the Speaker of the Lok Sabha hails from one of the two parties, asserting that such a move would be advantageous not only for their own interests but also for the sanctity of the Constitution and democratic principles.

During a press briefing held in this locale, Sanjay Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), underscored the pivotal role the opposition INDIA coalition might play should the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) opt to nominate a candidate for the position of Lok Sabha Speaker without the backing of the BJP. Singh accentuated that the BJP tended to allocate “jhunjhuna” (less significant ministries) to its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies while retaining all the crucial ministries for itself.

“I implore parties such as the Janta Dal(United) and the TDP to consider having the Speaker from their own ranks. Such a move would serve the interests of their respective parties as well as uphold the sanctity of the Constitution and democratic norms,” he expressed. Singh urged the INDIA coalition to contemplate the prospect of the TDP nominating a candidate for the position of Lok Sabha Speaker.

“In the event that the TDP decides to field its own candidate, the role of INDIA constituents, including the Congress, will prove to be exceedingly significant,” he remarked. AAP, an integral component of the INDIA coalition, contested 22 Lok Sabha constituencies spanning Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, and Assam. However, it only secured victory in three seats in Punjab, conceding defeat in the remaining contests. In Delhi, AAP contested the seats in collaboration with the Congress.

The BJP-led NDA clinched victory for the third consecutive term, securing 293 Lok Sabha seats out of a total of 543, whereas the INDIA coalition secured 234 seats.
