In Jaipur, the Supreme Court ruled against Bitrihotra Mohanty, also known as Bitti Mohanty, for his involvement in the assault of a German traveler in Alwar. The court has instructed Mohanty to turn himself in to the prison authorities within a span of two months.
A panel comprising Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Sanjay Karol issued this directive while dismissing Mohanty’s Special Leave Petition (SLP) plea.
Back on March 20, 2006, the Additional Sessions Court of Alwar convicted Bitti Mohanty, son of a former IPS officer, for the assault on a German traveler. On April 12, 2006, the court sentenced Mohanty to seven years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. Despite an appeal against this ruling, the High Court upheld the decision of the lower court.
Meanwhile, during his incarceration following the verdict, Mohanty was granted a 15-day parole on November 20, 2006, due to his mother’s illness. However, upon the expiration of the parole on December 4, 2006, the convict managed to evade authorities.
Upon his subsequent apprehension, on October 16, 2014, the lower court sentenced him to an additional three months in prison for his escape. It was ordered that this three-month term be served subsequent to the completion of his sentence for the assault.
Mohanty contested this ruling in the High Court, arguing for the concurrent execution of both sentences. However, the Court dismissed Mohanty’s plea in 2017.
During the consideration of the SLP filed in the Supreme Court regarding the original case, Mohanty was granted bail on March 31, 2017.
