In New Delhi, an Indian citizen expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for orchestrating Operation Indravati in Haiti. Recently, India initiated Operation Indravati to repatriate its citizens from Haiti to the Dominican Republic amidst the political turmoil.

“Firoz Valakettil from Kerala conveyed appreciation to the Indian administration and Modi ji for the evacuation…special acknowledgment to the Indian consulate in Haiti…,” he remarked. S Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs, shared on X platform, “The assurance of Modi ji persists in yielding results. #OperationIndravati remains active in Haiti. Let’s hear the sentiments of Firoz Valakettil from Kerala.”

As part of the ongoing mission, a total of 12 Indian nationals were successfully evacuated. Through his official X account, Jaishankar communicated, “12 Indian citizens were safely evacuated today. We remain fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and welfare of our compatriots abroad. We extend our gratitude to the Government of the Dominican Republic for their assistance.”

Earlier this week, EAM Jaishankar pledged the safe repatriation of Indian citizens worldwide, highlighting India’s proactive foreign policy in executing operations like Indravati in Haiti and Ganga in Ukraine.

“In Haiti, the safety of approximately 25-30 individuals was paramount. Every life holds significance, necessitating the establishment of a robust system…Preparation is imperative. Over the past decade, we have laid the groundwork, establishing a contingency fund to expedite assistance for those stranded abroad.”

“Furthermore, in the event of intervention, we strategize comprehensive coordination involving the defense ministry, navy, and air force,” he elaborated. Amidst the turmoil and unrest in the economically challenged Caribbean nation, a dedicated control center and emergency hotline were established to facilitate the evacuation of distressed Indian nationals from Haiti.

Haiti declared a state of emergency following attacks by armed factions on the nation’s largest penitentiary in Port-au-Prince earlier this month, resulting in casualties among law enforcement and prison personnel and enabling the escape of approximately 3,500 inmates, as reported by CNN.

A prominent figure within these armed factions, Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier, claimed responsibility for the jailbreak, citing it as part of a larger scheme to overthrow the interim government led by Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

United Nations estimates indicate that these armed factions currently commandeer 80% of Haiti’s capital, persisting in their struggle for control. Concurrently, while Henry was absent from the country, hostile groups besieged the primary airport to thwart his return.
