Kerala’s Alappuzha district has encountered a bird flu surge within two panchayats after testing revealed the presence of avian influenza (H5N1) in duck samples, according to local officials.
Ducks from Edatva Panchayat’s Ward 1 Vilakkumaram farmland and Cheruthana Panchayat’s Ward 3 were tested at a Bhopal lab due to exhibiting flu-like symptoms. Lab results verified H5N1 strain’s prevalence in the samples.
In response, the government has initiated a thorough strategy. The district’s governance convened an emergency review to assess the situation.
The district collector has mandated culling domestic birds within a one-kilometer radius of the epicenter. The animal welfare department is mobilizing resources, with a Rapid Action Force organized to handle the crisis.
Officials urged calm among the populace, confirming minimal risk of human transmission at this time.
