The situation in Sandeshkhali, Kolkata, has been tense for over 10 days due to alleged atrocities committed by TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides, as claimed by women protestors seeking justice. The unrest led to a team of women BJP leaders, including Locket Chatterjee and others, planning a visit to Sandeshkhali.
However, the Kolkata Police detained Locket Chatterjee and the BJP leaders on their way to Sandeshkhali. The area has been plagued by accusations of land-grab and sexual assault against Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters, with the alleged perpetrator evading capture. The Calcutta High Court instructed a collaborative SIT, comprising the CBI and West Bengal Police, to investigate an assault on ED officials in Sandeshkhali, with a deadline to present findings by February 12.
The NHRC has also taken note of the situation, conducting a spot-enquiry to investigate reported human rights violations. Earlier, the NHRC issued a notice to the DGP regarding the detention of a journalist in Sandeshkhali, directing a report submission within two weeks. The Commission aims to gather facts through a thorough investigation and has expressed concern over the reported human rights violations in the area.
