In the Banbhoolpura region of Haldwani, a strict curfew persists as Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) deployed a unit following upheaval sparked by the demolition of an unauthorized madrasa during an anti-encroachment initiative. The unrest resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries.
Responding to potential escalation, the state government requisitioned four paramilitary units from the central government. Presently, a contingent of 150 SSB personnel has arrived in Haldwani, armed with contemporary weaponry.
Chief Secretary Radha Raturi penned a missive to the Union Home Ministry, seeking additional central forces to preempt any deterioration post the curfew’s cessation. Sources indicate that the dispatched SSB unit hails from the Lakhimpur division in Uttar Pradesh, boasting advanced armaments.
The condition of several injured individuals from the incident remains precarious. Over 300 casualties, including 100 law enforcement officers, were documented in the Haldwani turmoil. Certain zones are under Section 144 restrictions, and internet services have been suspended.
The local administration and police have bolstered security measures, conducting thorough inspections at district borders. While vehicular movement in Haldwani is reinstated, meticulous scrutiny of commuters involves identity verification, capturing photographs, and forwarding them to higher authorities to thwart potential escape attempts by miscreants.
