New Delhi: On the present Monday, the Supreme Court prolonged the provisional release bestowed upon Ashish Mishra, offspring of Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra, implicated in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri turmoil that led to the loss of eight lives.
A bench, inclusive of justices Surya Kant and K V Viswanathan, instructed the apex court registry to procure a report from the trial court regarding the evolution of the case and deferred the proceedings in this matter. On the 26th of September in the preceding year, the Supreme Court sanctioned Mishra to venture into and stay within the National Capital Territory of Delhi, tending to his ailing mother and seeking treatment for his daughter in the national capital.
The apex court annulled the court’s antecedent stipulation, barring Mishra from entering Delhi. It explicitly articulated that Mishra should abstain from engaging in any public ceremonial function and refrain from addressing the media in connection with the sub judice case. Additionally, it accentuated that the prohibition on Mishra entering Uttar Pradesh will persist.

In January of 2023, the highest court bestowed an eight-week provisional release upon Ashish Mishra in the case, concurrently instructing his departure from Uttar Pradesh within a week of his release from incarceration.
In October of 2021, a tragic incident unfolded in Lakhimpur Kheri district, claiming the lives of eight individuals, following a conflagration ignited during a protest by farmers opposing the visit of the then Deputy Chief Minister, Keshav Prasad Maurya, to the region.
