New Delhi: In the wake of a recent dispute over the Enforcement Directorate’s assertion regarding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s mango consumption during his custody, the Aam Aadmi Party’s pushback prompted Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena to solicit a report from the Directorate General of Tihar Jail. This move was initiated following an accusation that Kejriwal had been denied insulin injections in jail.
On Thursday, revelations emerged concerning Kejriwal’s rising blood glucose levels, with AAP leaders voicing alarm over potential health risks. Over the past couple of days, AAP members have consistently expressed anxiety about Kejriwal’s noticeable weight loss.
Party ministers and leaders have castigated the jail administration, claiming that despite Kejriwal’s elevated glucose levels, they failed to administer necessary insulin injections. In response, LG Saxena stepped in and requested an account from the jail authorities. Saxena conveyed grave concern and issued a firm directive ensuring no neglect of the Chief Minister’s health would be allowed.
Upon entering incarceration, the AAP convener managed minimal rest in his modest 14×8-foot cell, as informed by prison officials. Prior to his confinement, Kejriwal underwent a medical evaluation, during which his blood glucose was found to be under 50. Subsequently, he was provided with medication based on medical recommendations.
The Enforcement Directorate claims that Kejriwal, apprehended in relation to an excise scandal, indulges in daily high-sugar foods such as mangoes and sweets, despite his type 2 diabetes, allegedly to substantiate a plea for medical bail.
The ED presented its argument before Special Judge for CBI and ED cases, Kaveri Baweja, who instructed Tihar jail authorities to submit a comprehensive report including Kejriwal’s dietary regimen. Kejriwal has petitioned the court for authorization to consult his regular physician remotely due to his unstable blood sugar levels.
“Arvind Kejriwal is consuming high-sugar items, including ‘aloo poori’, mangoes, and sweets daily, despite his type 2 diabetes,” the ED reported to the court. “This appears to be a strategic move to build a case for medical bail.”
