Retired Indian Navy Commander B.K. Verma, one of the eight former Indian Navy personnel released from a jail in Qatar, expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his personal intervention in securing their release. Verma, who was sentenced to death in October on charges of alleged espionage, had his sentence later commuted. He shared his feelings during a visit to attend a family wedding in Indore.

Verma, at 58 years old, displayed stoicism regarding missing his daughter’s wedding while in custody, emphasizing that such sacrifices were part of the life of a naval officer who often has to travel to different locations. Despite the ordeal, he expressed joy and relief at being back with his family, especially on the day of his nephew’s wedding.

He credited Prime Minister Modi and also thanked the Emir of Qatar for their roles in securing his release, highlighting the magnanimous consideration of his case by the Qatari leader. Verma mentioned that he looked forward to spending time with his wife, children, and friends who supported the family during challenging times.

His wife, Suman, expressed her gratitude to God for her husband’s release, stating that reuniting with him was a moment they had been eagerly awaiting. She described the experience of seeing him again as if they were reliving their daughter’s wedding moment. Additionally, she thanked the Indian government for its efforts in securing Verma’s release.
