In Wayanad, a locale nestled in Kerala, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent figure within the Congress party and the incumbent Member of Parliament, has disclosed assets amounting to over Rs 20 crore in his official documentation for the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
Per the sworn statement presented to the electoral authority on the midweek day, his movable assets stand at a valuation exceeding Rs 9 crore (Rs 9,24,59,264), while his immovable assets are appraised at over Rs 11 crore (Rs 11,15,02,598). Thus, the cumulative worth of his assets surpasses the Rs 20 crore milestone (Rs 20,39,61,862).
Additionally, it’s noted in the affidavit that he possesses two parcels of land jointly owned with his sibling, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The documentation further delineates his sources of revenue, which encompass the stipend of an MP, proceeds from royalties, rentals, interests, bonds, dividends, capital gains from mutual funds, and sundry other income streams.
The disclosed income for the fiscal year 2022-23 is reported to be Rs 1,02,78,680, as stated in the affidavit. Furthermore, the Congress luminary has asserted his educational credentials, declaring his attainment of a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rollins College, Florida, in 1994, and an M.Phil in Development Studies from Trinity College, University of Cambridge, in 1995. On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi officially lodged his nomination papers for the parliamentary constituency of Wayanad, following a procession through the streets of Kalpetta in Wayanad.
A multitude of individuals, including leaders and supporters from the United Democratic Front (UDF), congregated at Kalpetta to extend a warm reception to Rahul. Accompanied by his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul led a parade from Kalpetta to the Civil Station. He expressed his unwavering commitment to championing the concerns of Wayanad on the national and global stage.
In the same electoral district, Annie Raj, a prominent figure in the Communist Party of India (CPI) at the national level and a candidate for the Left Democratic Front (LDF), also submitted her nomination papers. The CPI is an ally of the dominant Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front in Kerala. Despite being coalition partners in the opposition coalition known as INDIA, the CPI and Congress find themselves in fierce contention in Kerala, fielding formidable candidates against each other.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), driven by a fervent desire to secure hegemony in the upcoming 2024 elections, has nominated Kerala State President K Surendran as a candidate representing the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the constituency. Kerala, a state where the Congress still wields considerable influence, dispatches 20 representatives to the Lok Sabha.
The electoral exercise for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls across all 20 constituencies in the southern state of India is slated for April 26, with the vote tallying scheduled for June 4.
