In Kolkata, TMC luminary Mahua Moitra has solidified her decision to engage in campaign activities within her Krishnanagar constituency this Thursday, opting to forgo the summons from the Enforcement Directorate beckoning her presence for interrogation at their New Delhi office.
Addressing the press, she articulated, “My focus will be on canvassing within the boundaries of the Krishnangar constituency come afternoon.” The Enforcement Directorate, in a fresh move, dispatched summonses to Moitra and Darshan Hiranandani, a Dubai-based entrepreneur, concerning a case of contravention under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
The 49-year-old leader of the Trinamool Congress had been summoned twice previously by the central agency, yet she refrained from appearing, citing official commitments, and sought postponement of the summons.
Moitra, who faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha in December on grounds of “unethical conduct,” has been put forth as the candidate once again by her party for the Krishnanagar seat in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) executed raids on her premises in connection with the cash-for-query case just this past Saturday, following the directive from the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal instructing the federal agency to delve into the allegations brought forth by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. Moitra vehemently refuted any allegations of misconduct.
