Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted a recent media report revealing what he termed as the “callous” act of the Congress in surrendering the Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka.

Describing the revelation as “eye-opening and startling,” Modi expressed the sentiment shared by many Indians, asserting that such actions erode trust in the Congress. “This incident serves as a stark reminder of the Congress’ approach over the past 75 years, consistently undermining India’s unity, integrity, and interests,” Modi emphasized, sharing his remarks on X along with the referenced report.

Echoing similar sentiments, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the significance of these revelations to the populace. “It is imperative that the citizens are fully informed about our nation’s history,” he remarked on X, underscoring the importance of acknowledging these historical realities. Additionally, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi drew attention to the implications of the Congress’ decision, particularly on Tamil Nadu fishermen, who have faced repercussions due to the handover of the island.

Tracing back to 1975, Trivedi elucidated on the ramifications of the agreement signed between India and Lanka, which restricted Tamil Nadu fishermen from accessing the island. Despite the silence from political counterparts like the DMK and the Congress on the matter, Trivedi commended Modi for his steadfast commitment to addressing issues concerning the nation and its populace.

The BJP remains optimistic about leveraging this issue for political gains, particularly in the context of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Highlighting the emotive resonance of Sri Lanka’s treatment of its Tamilian populace in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, the BJP aims to capitalize on the discontent surrounding the issue. The report, sourced from a RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai, sheds light on the decision-making process of the then Indira Gandhi government in 1974, leading to the transfer of territory in the Palk Strait.

Furthermore, the report references the comments of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on relinquishing claims to the island, further fueling the ongoing dispute between India and Lanka. Taking a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Trivedi urged him to acknowledge his party’s role in the matter, emphasizing the accountability of not just the party but also his family.
