India, on Tuesday, has urgently broached the issue with Moscow, calling for the “expedited liberation and repatriation of all Indian nationals affiliated with the Russian Army.”

The Ministry of External Affairs revealed that two Indian citizens, conscripted by the Russian military, have recently perished in the protracted hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the bereaved families. Our Embassy in Moscow has been persistently advocating with Russian authorities, including the Ministry of Defense, for the prompt repatriation of the mortal remains,” the MEA declared.

The Ministry of External Affairs, along with the Indian Embassy in Moscow, has vigorously pursued this matter with the Russian Ambassador in New Delhi and relevant officials in Moscow, advocating for the swift release and return of all Indian nationals associated with the Russian Army, the ministry added.

“India has further insisted on a cessation of any further recruitment of our nationals by the Russian military. Such actions are incongruent with our bilateral partnership,” stated the MEA.

India also exhorted its citizens to exercise prudence when considering employment opportunities in Russia. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine could have multifaceted ramifications for India, a significant importer of energy resources like oil and gas, which might face price volatility due to disruptions in the global energy markets stemming from the conflict.

India, traditionally adhering to a policy of non-alignment, strives to maintain amicable relations with both Russia and Ukraine. The conflict could impinge upon regional stability, especially in Central Asia and the broader Eurasian landscape, areas where India harbors strategic interests.

While the direct repercussions on India might not be as severe as those experienced by nations in closer proximity to the conflict zone, the situation in Russia and Ukraine bears substantial relevance to India’s economic, diplomatic, and security concerns.
