In the city of Thiruvananthapuram, located in Kerala, a significant metamorphosis is underway within the Indian Navy. Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, declared that the naval force is undergoing a profound shift, discarding colonial remnants, and envisages becoming a fully ‘Atmanirbhar’ (self-reliant) entity by the year 2047.
Addressing the media following discussions with Navy veterans, Hari Kumar highlighted the Navy’s remarkable progress in indigenization, boasting the ability to construct 33 submarines and 63 ships autonomously. Expressing their aspirations, he stated, “Our vision is to achieve complete Atmanirbhar status by 2047, wherein all submarines, aircraft, and weaponry will be manufactured within India.”
He disclosed that 75 challenges were presented to the industry, garnering a commendable response. “Several contracts have been initiated, and some products have already been incorporated. A plethora of innovative technologies and products are currently in development,” Hari Kumar elaborated.
Foreseeing a significant reduction in age within the next seven years through the Agniveer recruitment initiative, the Naval Chief shared plans to capitalize on the demographic dividend. He emphasized, “We aim to cultivate a younger workforce, with an average age of 26, to adapt to evolving technological demands.”
Agniveers joining the Navy, noted for their tech-savvy nature, exhibit exceptional responsiveness to new technological challenges. Hari Kumar commended their keen motivation and active contribution to the force.
Touching upon the utilization of Vizhinjam port, Admiral Hari Kumar expressed the Navy’s interest, citing preliminary talks with the Adani group, though no concrete progress was made. The rapid induction of India’s indigenous surface-to-surface missile, Brahmos, into Navy warships is underway, with plans to install it across the entire fleet.
Regarding India’s third indigenous aircraft carrier, Hari Kumar acknowledged planned changes due to emerging technologies. He stressed the necessity for the carrier to accommodate various modern aircraft types. Contemplating the reordering of an INS Vikrant-type carrier, he acknowledged Cochin Shipyard’s expertise in IAC construction.
Addressing Navy veterans earlier, Hari Kumar emphasized the Navy’s commitment to shedding colonial remnants, including changes to ranking systems and insignia. The force is evolving into a gender-neutral entity by opening ranks to women, allowing them to serve in submarines and with marine commandos.
Discussing administrative reforms, Chief of Naval Staff detailed the introduction of a digital feedback system for sailors and a 360-degree appraisal for officers, incorporating feedback from juniors regarding character and conduct. A single window system for retired personnel has been established to address grievances effectively and hassle-free.
