In a significant shift, Mira Murthy has been entrusted with steering the company as the interim CEO following the departure of CEO Sam Altman. Murthy joined OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, after departing Tesla in 2018.

OpenAI released a statement on Friday, affirming, “The company has relieved its co-founder Sam Altman from his position. The board found that Sam was consistently falling short in communicating with the board.”
The statement continued, “We are appointing Chief Technology Officer Mira Murthy as the interim CEO. Concurrently, we are actively seeking a permanent CEO to take on this role.”

Addressing the rationale behind Murthy’s appointment, OpenAI stated, “With Murthy’s extensive tenure and experience in AI governance, policies, and involvement across all facets of the company, the board believes she is well-suited for this role.”
Meet Mira Murthy
Mira was born in 1988 in Albania, with several media reports claiming her parents have Indian roots. She completed her education in Canada and holds a degree in mechanical engineering. Notably, her involvement in preparing the Tesla Model X car was pivotal during her tenure at Tesla. She commenced her journey at OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, in 2018 and was appointed as OpenAI’s CEO last year.
