The Collegium’s Decision

The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjeev Khanna, B.R. Gavai, and Suryakant, finalized the recommendations on Monday (November 6th).

Collegium’s Assertion

The Collegium, in its proposal to the central government, emphasized that the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court is 34, while currently, there are 31 justices. The court is grappling with a substantial backlog of cases.

“The increasing number of pending cases has significantly burdened the judges. Considering this, it is imperative to ensure the full strength of justices in the court at all times,” stated the Collegium. Consequently, the Collegium recommended the names to fill all three existing vacancies.

Proposal Details

The Collegium further outlined that it deliberated on the names of Chief Justices and senior judges of High Courts for appointment to the Supreme Court. Following thorough discussions, these names were sent for approval.

In a proactive measure, the proposal suggests that the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court should be from the eligible Chief Justices and senior judges of the High Courts. This meticulous consideration aims to ensure a comprehensive and efficient judiciary.

This strategic elevation not only reinforces the Supreme Court’s manpower but also signals a commitment to addressing the mounting caseload, reinforcing the pillars of justice in the nation.
