In the city of New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a call on Wednesday to commend the efforts of Amrita Roy, a candidate representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Bengal. He praised her endeavors aimed at reclaiming funds purportedly ‘swindled’ from the disadvantaged and seized by the Enforcement Directorate, ensuring their restitution.
Notably, this marked the second occasion where the Prime Minister engaged in a telephonic conversation with a female candidate of the party. The day prior, Modi conversed with Rekha Patra, BJP’s nominee for the Basirhat constituency in the Lok Sabha elections. He applauded her endeavors in shedding light on the challenges faced by women in the Sandeshkhali region of West Bengal, referring to her as the embodiment of strength, ‘Shakti Swaroopa’.
Patra garnered Modi’s admiration for her vocal stance against the alleged oppression orchestrated by local Trinamool Congress (TMC) figure Shajahan Sheikh and his associates. Representing the BJP in the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, encompassing the aforementioned village, she engaged in a dialogue with Modi wherein he sought insights into her campaign arrangements. Additionally, he inquired about the BJP’s standing among voters and other pertinent matters, while she recounted the ordeals endured by the women of Sandeshkhali.
Touched by PM Modi’s gesture, Patra reciprocated with gratitude, expressing her elation over his support. She likened the experience to having the divine presence of Lord Ram by their side. Furthermore, she candidly addressed concerns regarding electoral apprehensions, citing her abstention from voting since 2011 owing to the prevailing circumstances in the region.
Modi endeavored to assuage her fears, assuring her of the Election Commission’s commitment to conducting free and fair elections, ensuring universal suffrage. Patra also acknowledged the transition of TMC supporters, initially opposed to her candidacy, now standing in solidarity with her cause.
