In the wake of the Lok Sabha poll revelations, the Union cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened on Wednesday to advocate for the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, set to conclude its tenure on June 16.
Sources divulge that with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU) – the presumed “kingmakers” – extending their blessings, the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) administration, along with the inauguration of PM Modi, is anticipated to unfold on June 8. An official exchange of supportive declarations between these factions and the BJP is anticipated during an upcoming alliance summit.
The Election Commission of India has officially declared outcomes for 542 out of the 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, with the BJP clinching victory in 240 seats, while the Congress secures 99. Notably, the BJP’s triumph is notably lower than its previous tallies of 303 in 2019 and 282 in 2014. Conversely, the Congress has witnessed a significant surge, bagging 99 seats compared to its prior tallies of 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014.
Surpassing the 230-mark, the INDIA coalition has emerged as a formidable contender, defying all prognostications from exit polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi secures a third term, yet the BJP will necessitate the support of other coalition partners, notably JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP’s chief Chandrababu Naidu.
The BJP falls short by 32 seats of the majority mark of 272, marking the first instance since its ascension to power in 2014 that it has failed to secure an outright majority.
Concurrently, NDA leaders are slated to convene later today at Prime Minister Modi’s official residence. Conversely, the opposition INDIA bloc will also convene today, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge orchestrating a gathering of alliance leaders at his residence. Buoyed by a favorable outcome in the LS polls, leaders of the INDIA bloc will chart their strategic trajectory moving forward.
In an earlier address on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to the populace for their endorsement, affirming that the BJP-led NDA would form its third consecutive government. He hailed it as a triumph for the principles of ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’ and the unwavering faith of the populace in India’s constitutional ethos.
