“On behalf of my fellow citizens across the nation, I extend my deepest respects to all the courageous martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy,” PM Modi penned on X.
The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, which took place at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, in Punjab, is observed annually on April 13.
A look back at April 13, 1919:
It was during the Baisakhi festival when around 20,000 individuals gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, a garden spanning six to seven acres in Amritsar, Punjab, to peacefully protest the detention of two leaders, Dr. Satyapal and Dr. Saifuddin.
Suddenly, British forces unleashed gunfire upon the unarmed assembly in the open garden, resulting in the deaths of hundreds and leaving many more wounded. After ceasing fire, the troops quickly departed the scene, abandoning the dead and injured. This event marked a pivotal moment in modern Indian history, etching a lasting scar on Indo-British relations.
