Amidst the commotion in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar, the chief of the West Bengal BJP, found himself entangled in a skirmish that led to his hospitalization. The altercation unfolded when party members clashed with state police, obstructed from entering Sandeshkhali. Sources indicate that Majumdar experienced a vehicular mishap during the Sandeshkhali protest.
While addressing reporters in the North 24 Parganas region, Majumdar, in an unfortunate turn of events, lost equilibrium, tumbling onto the car’s bonnet. Subsequently, he was admitted to the comprehensive Basirhat hospital. Women in the region have been protesting alleged offenses against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates.
Earlier in the day, Bengal police thwarted Mazumder’s departure from a guest home in Taki, North 24 Parganas district. Extensive police deployment aims to prevent BJP leaders from reaching Sandeshkhali, where section 144 is in effect, prohibiting road blockages, processions, agitations, rallies, and public meetings.
After the tumultuous events in Sandeshkali involving grave accusations by local women against Trinamool strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates, Majumdar established a camp in the area. Following a mob attack on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team investigating a ration scam case at Sheikh’s residence, Sheikh has been missing for a month.
Seeking permission to visit Sandeshkhali, the state BJP chief and other party members initiated a sit-in protest outside the police superintendent’s office in Basirhat. The breach of peace compelled the local government to impose prohibitory measures in the region.
“In Sandeshkhali, TMC workers have been subjecting women to months of assault – Sheikh Shahjahan, Shibu Hajra, and Uttam Sardar are the perpetrators. We approached the SP peacefully, demanding their arrest. If they remain unapprehended, how will the women in Sandeshkhali regain confidence?” Majumdar articulated on Tuesday.
Having worshiped Goddess Saraswati on the Ichamatis riverbank on Wednesday, Majumder’s attempt to proceed to Sandeshkhali was allegedly thwarted by the police. The BJP contends that the hotel was besieged by the police. Sukanth found himself practically under house arrest. Discontent, Sukant Majumder boarded a police car, but during the altercation, he reportedly tumbled from the vehicle and lost consciousness. BJP workers hastily retrieved him, transporting him to the hospital.
