Kanpur, nestled in Uttar Pradesh, bore witness to a disconcerting episode where a gentleman abruptly declared triple talaq to his spouse amidst the motion of a train, hastily absconding upon arrival at Jhansi Junction. This unsettling occurrence unfolded on May 1 in the precincts of Pukhraya town within the Bhoganipur Kotwali vicinity. Law enforcement authorities affirmed the initiation of legal proceedings against the perpetrator.
Disclosures from the police department unveiled the individual behind the act as a 28-year-old named Mohammad Arshad, who journeyed alongside his 26-year-old wife, Afsana. Upon the train’s arrival at Jhansi station, Arshad vocalized the triple talaq edict before physically assaulting his spouse and subsequently disembarking. Afsana, taken aback by the abruptness of events, sought recourse with the Government Railway Police, who facilitated her return to Pukhrayan in Kanpur Dehat, the origin of her journey to Bhopal earlier that day. In response to her grievance, an official complaint was lodged, instigating a search for Arshad.
Providing further context, authorities disclosed that Arshad, an individual employed as a computer engineer at Tech Mahindra, entered into matrimony with Afsana, a graduate from Kota in Rajasthan, on January 12. Their matrimonial union was facilitated through a classified advertisement. However, during a visit to Arshad’s ancestral abode in Pukhrayan, Afsana unearthed Arshad’s pre-existing marital commitment.
Subsequently, Afsana confronted Arshad, prompting a barrage of dowry-related harassment from Arshad and his mother. This pattern of mistreatment persisted until Arshad resorted to the pronouncement of triple talaq, forsaking his spouse aboard the moving train, as elucidated by law enforcement officials. Afsana’s appeal for assistance has garnered widespread attention, with a circulating video petitioning Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene and address the plight of women subjected to such abandonment via divorce.
Confirming the registration of a legal case against Arshad, Circle Officer Priya Singh cited the inclusion of Arshad’s maternal uncle Aqeel, father Nafeesul Hasan, and mother Parveen in accordance with Afsana’s grievance. Singh affirmed a thorough investigation into the matter, assuring appropriate legal action against the accused parties.
