Amidst the unfortunate event wherein three laborers plunged into the depths of an underground sewer chamber in the Malad district of Mumbai a couple of days ago, the casualty count has now reached three as per officials’ statements on Saturday.
Initially, the grim incident resulted in the demise of two individuals after they descended into the depths of a 15-foot subterranean sewer chamber on Thursday evening. Subsequently, the third individual, who had been receiving medical attention at a government-operated medical facility, succumbed on Saturday morning, as confirmed by a representative from the fire brigade.
The occurrence transpired at Malwani Gate number 8 along Abdul Hameed Road within the Ambujwadi precinct of Malad (West), elucidated the official. “The latest victim, Ramlagan Chotelal Kevat, aged 45, who had been under medical supervision for the past forty-eight hours, passed away on Saturday. Initially, the tragedy claimed the lives of Suraj Kevat, aged 18, and Bikas Kevat, aged 20,” the official added.
The trio of laborers had been engaged to undertake the sanitation of the sewer conduit when they inadvertently descended into the chamber situated beneath a communal lavatory under the jurisdiction of a designated contractor. Following their retrieval by local residents, they were transported to a nearby medical facility, the fire brigade official recounted.
An official from the Malwani police station remarked, “Drawing from preliminary information, an accidental death report (ADR) has been lodged. As of yet, we have not received any formal grievances in this regard. However, should any indications of misconduct or malpractice emerge, we will proceed to initiate legal proceedings autonomously. Presently, we are in the process of corroborating all pertinent details, and our inquiries are ongoing.”
